Bachelor of Arts in Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice, University of British Columbia, 2023

My name is Elijah Foran (they/them). I am a trans and disabled researcher and health advocate. As a graduate from the UBC Social Justice Institute, I center community-oriented, anti-ableist and anti-oppressive practices in my work. With a background in both visual and spoken word art, I value a creative approach to learning, research and activism.

My research will draw on both social science and health disciplines to explore challenges faced by trans-disabled individuals when accessing healthcare. Systemic inequalities at this intersection may lead to increased stigma, negative interactions with providers, or unmet health needs. This community-based research study will provide insight into how those occupying both transgender and disabled identities navigate and advocate for themselves within the healthcare system. Grounded by the authenticity of participant voices, the findings will highlight advocacy strategies used by trans-disabled community leaders and examine how the strategies can be a tool to foster improved healthcare for this population. I plan on producing a community-based zine in order to make my research more accessible to a wide range of audiences, to provoke change and spur action.
